Abstract

The objective of this study was to isolate native strains of Metarhizium spp. for the control of pest insects present in maize crops using the insect trap technique at different sites in the municipality of Tantoyuca, Veracruz. Sampling was conducted in two locations: El Abra with 6 samples and Negrital with 9 samples. In the first sampling, 6 native strains of Metarhizium spp. were isolated, 5 from Negrital and 1 from El Abra. A second sampling confirmed that the isolates were positive at the sampled sites. These isolates were purified, characterized, and identified under a microscope using Barnett's taxonomic keys. The isolate TNe_310922 showed an average growth of 0.49 cm per day, while the isolate TPc_310922 showed 0.20 cm. The presence of mycosis in TNe_310922 was observed in 62.5%, higher than TPc_310922, which showed 50% after 216 hours of infection. It was concluded that the TNe_310922 isolate demonstrated significant in vitro potential, suggesting it could be a promising isolate for field evaluations.
